The Chuan Spa at the Langham Hotel was the winner of the World Luxury Spa Awards Best Luxury Spa of 2013 as well as Forbes Star award. “Chuan” means “flowing water” and in Chinese culture flowing water is seen as the source of life and balance.
This spa specialising in traditional Chinese medicine and continues the hotel’s theme of luxury and opulence with a grand feeling with calming creams offset by dark wood.
The dim lighting and dark wall create a cosy, cave-like feel in the steam, salt sauna where you can melt away any stress. The basement 16-metre swimming pool lies beneath a grand glass staircase. The double-height ceiling and glass walls mean you can see into the pool area from above, making it light and bright.
On the next level there is the thermal area which is finished in black slate. This area has two heated, tiled loungers, vitality pool with water jets and a Himalayan rock salt sauna with an intense orange light behind the rock crystals. You can also find a gym with resistance equipment and a fitness studio. Also on this level are changing rooms with a sauna, steam room, showers and lockers.
There are six treatment rooms on the top level, located near the relaxation area. There is a range of holistic treatments available and a dedicated ‘contemplation area’ set aside for after your treatment for you to relax. Here you can find magazines, herbal teas, fruit and headphones to zone out the world.
Before any treatment you will receive a Five Element Assessment where you answer a questionnaire based on how you are feeling on that particular day which will help determine which of the five elements is out of equilibrium. This will inform your treatment and help give you lifestyle adjustments moving forward.
